Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in First Speech
On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his administration.
A Historic Leader
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”
Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
