Hi there! I'm incredibly excited to find out what color will define 2026. What's the scoop?

Brace yourself, since every year for over two decades, Pantone announces a Color of the Year. This selection seeks to represent the spirit of the times—shaping everything from how we feel and what we wear to how we design our living spaces. Last year's selection was the rich tan "a coffee-inspired shade," which came after the subtly inviting "a fuzzy pastel."

The latest announcement, though, is even more puzzling. It is "Cloud Dancer," labeled as a "billowy, balanced white."

Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … permitting all colors to stand out."

Interesting, Cloud Dancer… seriously, white? Is this a prank? Does white qualify as a proper color?

What is the best way to describe the color of clouds? Milk? Even though some consider white as a color, all color is fundamentally a range of visible light. You can find it in a box of crayons, so in everyday terms the answer is yes.

If Pantone is out of touch is more difficult to ascertain. They claim, Cloud Dancer mixes well with other colors, provides a calm backdrop, declares simplicity, and radiates refined calm.

The public reaction, however, has not been as kind. Some commentators have suggested Pantone of being completely "tone-deaf." Style expert Mandy Lee described it as "underwhelming." Critics have likened it to subtle advocacy of problematic concepts seen in other media.

I see, one would hope they're happily ignorant that the timing is awkward to be explicitly championing whiteness... So, how might someone rarely near a runway use this information in my world? My kitchen ceiling is my ceiling with white, does that qualify?

It's funny you mention runways, as many this season's presentations have been exceptionally bright, featuring plant-based fabrics on the runway.

The color white were present, as per usual, in high-fashion looks—from elegant blouses to sleek suits. Celebrities and public figures have also been spotted in pristine white outfits at public appearances.

The positive takeaway is: chances are you already own something in this "understated" color of the year. As Pressman, Cloud Dancer "represents a more sustainable choice for the environmentally aware," which could mean avoiding the need to purchase new items at all.

SO, a style movement for the inherently lazy. An empty canvas, in a manner of speaking. A haven of monochromatic zen amid the clutter. Okay, I'm on board. Will you be creating a all-white theme for your closet?

Definitely not. Attempting to get out red wine stains from a white fabric? I'm not seeking additional cleaning headaches in 2026.

I do have a pair of once-white comfort shoes, and those are always in vogue.
