Treasury Chief Rachel Reeves Plans Targeted Measures on Bills in Upcoming Budget

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has revealed she is preparing "focused action to tackle cost of living pressures" in next month's financial statement.

In comments to media outlets, she stated that reducing inflation is a joint task of both the government and the Bank of England.

The United Kingdom's inflation rate is projected to be the highest among the Group of Seven advanced economies this calendar year and the following year.

Potential Energy Bill Measures

It is understood the administration could intervene to reduce utility costs, for instance by slashing the present 5% rate of value-added tax applied on energy supplies.

An additional option is to lower some of the policy costs currently added to bills.

Fiscal Limitations and Expert Predictions

The administration will obtain the next assessment from the independent fiscal watchdog, the OBR, on Monday, which will clarify how much space there is for these actions.

The view from the majority of economists is that the Chancellor will have to declare tax rises or budget cuts in order to fulfill her voluntary debt limits.

Previously on Thursday, calculations showed there was a twenty-two billion pound shortfall for the chancellor to address, which is at the more modest range of projections.

"It is a shared job between the central bank and the government to bear down further on some of the causes of inflation," the Chancellor informed the BBC in the US capital, at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

Tax Commitments and International Issues

While much of the attention has been on likely tax rises, the chancellor said the latest figures from the OBR had not altered her pledge to manifesto promises not to raise tax levels on income tax, VAT or National Insurance.

She blamed an "unpredictable world" with rising international and commercial tensions for the Budget revenue measures, likely to be targeted on those "wealthiest."

Global Economic Disputes

Commenting on worries about the United Kingdom's commercial links with the Asian nation she said: "Our national security always are paramount."

Last week's announcement by China to strengthen export controls on critical minerals and other resources that are crucial for high-technology manufacturing led US President Donald Trump to propose an further 100% import tax on imports from the Asian country, increasing the possibility of an full-scale trade war between the two economic giants.

The American finance chief described the Chinese action "commercial pressure" and "a international production control attempt."

Inquired about accepting the US offer to join its battle with the Asian nation, Reeves said she was "deeply worried" by Chinese actions and urged the Chinese government "to avoid restrictions and limit trade."

She said the decision was "harmful for the global economy and generates further challenges."

"In my view there are areas where we should confront Chinese policies, but there are also valuable chances to sell into Chinese markets, including financial services and other sectors of the economic system. We've got to maintain that equilibrium right."

The chancellor also confirmed she was collaborating with other major economies "regarding our own essential resources plan, so that we are reduced dependence."

NHS Drug Pricing and Investment

The Chancellor also acknowledged that the price the National Health Service spends on drugs could rise as a consequence of ongoing negotiations with the Trump administration and its pharmaceutical firms, in exchange for lower tariffs and funding.

Some of the biggest global drug companies have said recently that they are either delaying or canceling projects in the UK, with several attributing the low prices they are getting.

Last month, the government science advisor said the cost the NHS spends on medicines would must go up to prevent companies and pharmaceutical investment departing from the United Kingdom.

The Chancellor stated to the BBC: "We have seen due to the cost structure, that medical research, recent pharmaceuticals have not been offered in the UK in the extent that they are in other European countries."

"The objective is to ensure that people getting care from the NHS are able to obtain the finest essential drugs in the globe. And so we are reviewing this situation, and... looking to attract additional funding into the UK."
