The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran
Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding as scheduled, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the tournament group match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing rainbow flags to be brought into the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.
Legal Context of Formal Complaints
Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “objections against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners
Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.
- This special fixture concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s proud history of advocating for inclusion and equality.
- A design contest is underway to create images celebrating the occasion.
- Planners have pledged to ensuring all fans are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.
The region is home to a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region,” organizers concluded.
