The movie, though, may align too neatly with the mythologized version promoted by Russian state media that, domestically, it reads as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to craft a tailor-made persona of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show launched last October, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. While he is called Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this identical story rather than undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring permanent power.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The position was in essence a selection process with many contenders. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the state in practice.

• Per a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by the actor's debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led Russian media and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images swapping Craig’s face with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star popular with Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to question.
