Search parties have successfully guided all of the remaining trekkers near the east-facing slopes of Mount Everest in Tibet to security, including numerous of regional escorts and animal tenders, authorities stated. This wraps up one of the most extensive search-and-rescue efforts ever undertaken in the zone.

Large-Scale Evacuation Effort Concluded

Numerous of trekkers were found themselves stuck in thick snow over the past few days in the secluded Karma valley, after an unusually fierce snowstorm dumped heavy snowfall across the area.

Snow kept coming down all day Saturday in the valley, which sits at an average altitude of 4,200 meters (13,800 feet). By Sunday, emergency teams had guided approximately 350 hikers to safety.

Previous accounts had estimated that the last group of roughly 200 individuals were anticipated to reach their destination by Tuesday.

In total, 580 trekkers, coupled with more than 300 local guides, yak herders, and other crew members were brought out, according to official announcements released on Tuesday evening.

Survivors Describe Extreme Conditions

One Chinese trekker recalled how their group had been “too frightened to sleep” on Saturday, as snow rapidly accumulated around their tents, compelling them to shovel it every 90 minutes. They opted to move to lower ground on Sunday as the conditions deteriorated.

“On the way, we met our guide’s father, who had set out for him. That’s when we learned the snow was deep in the valley, too; community members, not able to contact their children on the mountain, were deeply concerned.”

Expedition Plans Disrupted

The snowstorm also disrupted the objectives of alpinists guided by a US-based climbing company to summit Cho Oyu, an 8,188-meter (26,864-foot) peak on the border between China and Nepal.

Tourism Growth in the Area

Karma valley was first visited by foreign explorers a hundred years ago. In the past few years, with the expansion of the Everest region in Tibet as a significant tourism destination, the area has brought in an increasing number of visitors. More than 540,000 visitors explored the Everest region last year, establishing a new record.

Area Remains Off-Limits

The Everest region is still temporarily closed to the public, covering the Karma and Rongshar valleys, as well as Cho Oyu.

Wider Effect

The significant snowfall over the weekend also affected many of travelers in other parts of western China, including Xinjiang, Qinghai, and Gansu. Sadly, at least one traveler died, due to a mix of low body temperature and altitude sickness.

Unusual Conditions

October is typically a busy season for the area, with normally fine and moderate weather, but one trekker of an 18-person hiking party that got back to Qudang remarked that the weather this year was “atypical.”
