Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An freshly coined initialism emerged a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts including child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a young patient who has lost their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
