Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

They also petitioned that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
