Blast Takes Three Police Officers While Executing Eviction Operation in Italy

Three police officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the house near Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away after the incident was located shortly later. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official thought the explosion had taken place on a floor above the access point and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.
