Arne Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was understandable for doubts to be raised about his position following a further heavy loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in twelve matches, representing the club's poorest streak since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league title holders on a tough night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I have got a lot of support from the top,” Slot commented.
“It's important to turn it around and get a victory obviously but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He added, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it's crucial that we improved our results.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, Slot explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful to the team and for me and those talks happen but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He added, “In the normal conversations we have I sense the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat so far so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Failings and Player Response
The manager highlighted known shortcomings from his team in their European loss, specifically missed opportunities and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones stated.
“It's simply not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to consider it. I'm beyond being angry internally. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I play for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a spell of this nature with results this poor.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And until that badge is gone, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to get this team return to its rightful place, demonstrate to all again what this club is about and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“However currently, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
