A Tragic Shift a Single Year Has Made in the United States

In late October 2024, the situation was utterly distinct. Prior to the national election, thoughtful citizens could admit the nation's serious imperfections – its injustices and inequality – however they could still identify it as the US. A democracy. A land where constitutional order meant something. A country headed by a respectable and ethical leader, despite his older age and declining health.

These days, as October 2025 ends, many of us scarcely know the land we inhabit. Individuals alleged as undocumented migrants are collected and shoved into vehicles, at times blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the White House – is being torn down for a grotesque dance hall. The president is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and requesting legal authorities transfer a massive sum of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are deployed to US urban areas under fabricated reasons. The military command, rebranded the War Department, has effectively rid itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of what could amount to nearly $1tn in public funds. Colleges, legal practices, news companies are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are regarded as aristocracy.

“The US, just months before its quarter-millennium anniversary as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, wrote recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I thought feasible, it occurred in America.”

Every morning starts with fresh terrors. And it is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined we are, and how quickly it unfolded.

Yet, we know that Trump was properly voted in. Despite his profoundly alarming previous administration and following the cautions linked to the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – following the president personally declared plainly he planned to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – sufficient voters elected him rather than his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as today's circumstances may be, it's more frightening to realize that we have only been nine months into this administration. What will an additional three years of this downfall find us? And what if that period transforms into something even longer, because there is not anyone to limit this ruler from opting that a third term is required, perhaps for national security reasons?

Certainly, all is not lost. We will have legislative votes next year which might create a new balance of power, if Democrats retake one or both houses of Congress. We have government representatives who are trying to impose a degree of oversight, for example lawmakers that are starting a probe concerning the try to fund seizure from the justice department.

And a presidential election three years from now could start the path to healing exactly as the prior selection placed us on this unfortunate course.

There are millions of Americans demonstrating in urban areas throughout communities, similar to recent recently during anti-authority protests.

A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is awakening”, similar to past following the Red Scare in the 1950s or throughout anti-war demonstrations or throughout the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the listing ship eventually was righted.

The author states he understands the signals of that awakening and sees it happening now. As support, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, bipartisan pushback to a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous defiance by media to accept military mandates they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists inactive until specific greed grows too toxic, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so noisy, that the giant is compelled except to rise.”

It's a positive outlook, and I respect Reich’s experienced view. Perhaps he will be validated.

At the same time, the major inquiries endure: will the nation regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status in the world and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts indicates that the latter is accurate; that everything might be gone. My positive feelings, nevertheless, tells me that we need to strive, through all methods we can.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that involves pushing media professionals to commit, more fully, to their mission of holding power to account. For different individuals, it may be participating in election efforts, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to defend ballot privileges.

Not even one year prior, we lived in a separate situation. In the future? Or after another term? The truth is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.
